Description

In our Family History Blog Writing course, students learn to build content for their family history blog. Participants will write and create all the pages for their new blog. Students come to the first class with their blog set up on their favourite blogging platform. Over 5 weeks, students will build the pages for a successful blog, identify the topic of their blog, outline the contents and write their first post.  At the end of the course, bloggers will leave with their first post ready to go and a completed monthly editorial calendar.

Here’s what you’ll learn

  • Identify your audience.
  • Establish specific goals for your blog.
  • Create a short online bio introducing you to your readers.
  • Learn to brainstorm topics and create an outline for your blog.
  • Understand the elements of a great family history blog post and write your first post.
  • Learn how to manage your blog.
  • Create a one-month editorial calendar.
  • Learn how to prioritize your time to sustain your blog long-term.
  • Learn about publishing online and how to turn your blog into a book.

Each week, students will be given small assignments to practice what they have learned. They will share their assignments with their fellow students in a private forum. They can ask questions in the forum, share ideas, struggles and successes. Lynn will review and critique each student’s work at the end of each week.

This is a wonderful course for anyone considering a blog as their chosen format for publishing their family history narrative. It covers all the high points of setting up a blog, brainstorming posts and developing a story arc for a blog. By the end of the course, you will have your first post written, critiqued, revised and ready to go. Six members of the first group to take this course have started their own writing group to continue the momentum. Lynn is a fantastic instructor with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. My five-star rating says it all.

I set up a blog 2 years ago after doing the Family History Writing Challenge. However in two years I hadn’t added one single post to it. Now, after doing Lynn’s Blog Writing Course, I have re- done my “About” page, know precisely who my audience is, and have developed the skills to be able to populate the blog with compelling stories. I particularly liked the forum as this was where we were able to bounce ideas off each other. It was also helpful to share our assignments and get feedback from fellow classmates, as an introduction to having our writing out there in the blogosphere.
I am so glad I did this course. It is the one thing that I have done in the past few years that has given me the skills, inspiration and enthusiasm to finally get my stories out there.

How many of us have wanted to start a family history blog, but stopped short of doing it because the idea turned into an overwhelming monster? This course helped me turn my chaos into something productive. It identified important blog elements, and broke them down into manageable tasks. The course materials were easy to follow, and the assignment schedule was manageable and flexible. The online interaction and sharing ideas with other classmates was beneficial as well.
By the end of the course I felt like I had slayed my monster. I had found my passion again, set up my blog, and published my first blog post! I learned so much, and will be reviewing the materials over and over again as I continue to write.
This was a great intro to blogging class! I would recommend it to anyone who wants to start their own blog, but doesn’t quite know where to start or just needs a good kick in the pants.
